11

27 March

13:31

High Raise

A walker made a 999 call but as the mobile phone coverage was poor, all we  got was a request for mountain rescue. There was no information on location nor the nature of help required.
We attempted to  work  out the phone's location by triangulation and this indicated the Threlkeld area or Sharp Edge. We sent a group out to reconnoître the possible  area and asked the air ambulance to check out Sharp Edge. As all of this was happening, some 40 minutes later, the police received a further call from the informant who had walked to Sergeant Man to get a signal. He was reporting a man who was in much pain with a groin strain.
As it turned out, the Great North Air Ambulance was able to fly direct to the scene and attend to the casualty who was taken to Carlisle Hospital with a suspected DVT.

Note.
Because there are lots of mountains in the Lake District, they tend to play havoc with mobile phone signals. Also, because of the low  resident population of the area, there are not so many mobile phone aerials. This results in a very poor, haphazard service and any attempts at signal triangulation are usually unhelpful - as in this case.
You can never rely on your mobile phone for help. If you do manage to get a connection, keep it live until the mountain rescue team has spoken to you.
