Due to the Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak, callouts were fewer this year.  8th December marked our 2000th recorded callout!

Old railway line from Keswick to Threlkeld

A mountain bike instructor skidded into a fence post and went over his handlebars, injuring his thigh.

6 January

Glaramara summit

A father (53 yrs) and son (28 yrs) were reported overdue. Their car was found at Seathwaite. They were both found sheltering on the summit at 00.30 hrs, having been unable to find a safe descent.

Blencathra - Blease Fell

A paraglider in his 30's lost control and fell to the ground, sustaining injuries to his pelvis and chest. He was airlifted by a helicopter in the area which was already attending other incidents.

Great End - SE Buttress

2 men on Aspirant, a winter climb, reported seeing a body lying in the snow on the crag. Closer investigation found this to be the man missing since September last year. For safety reasons, the body was recovered the following day.

An 'open verdict' was given at the following inquest.

Great End - SE Gully

Whilst investigating the above, 3 climbers were seen from the helicopter, waving for assistance.  They were brought to the top of the climb and escorted off.

Great End

2 climbers returned to collect their sacks, having left them at the foot of Central Gully the day before. They became separated. The poor weather conditions warranted a token search. Found in Wasdale mid afternoon.

Helvellyn - Brown Cove

A visiting MRT member broke his leg while undertaking winter training. Keswick MRT was asked to attend with additional equipment for the rescue. A helicopter due in the area also assisted.

Brandreth area

2 men became lost while on this section of the Coast to Coast walk. They used their mobile phone to summon assistance.

Dale Head

A 19 year old youth slipped and injured his leg while descending in icy conditions. He was taken to hospital by helicopter.

A lady (52 yrs) slipped and broke her ankle.

Rosthwaite - Lining Crag

A group of 3 men on the Coast to Coast walk became separated. 2 returned to Rosthwaite and reported the 3rd man missing. A mobile phone call from the man confirmed he was lost. He was located in poor conditions on High Raise.

Grisedale Pike (Lanty Well)

A walker (58 yrs) slipped and dislocated a shoulder on an icy path.

A lady (42 yrs) slipped on the icy path and broke her ankle.

A lady (43 yrs) slipped on a stone and broke her ankle.

A lady (59 yrs) slipped off the path and fell down the rocky fellside, sustaining leg, head and knee injuries.

Thirlmere

A man (30 yrs) was reported missing after a late night swim. Police divers found the body 2 days later.

A lady (55 yrs) slipped and injured her ankle.

Shouts were heard from someone with an injured leg. Nothing was found but the call was made with good intent.

A search was made for 2 missing couples.  One was found in Eskdale and the other made their way off unaware of the concern for them.

A lady (40 yrs) broke her ankle.

Scarth Gap

Assistance was given to Cockermouth MRT who were looking for an overdue runner (40 yrs). He turned up as the team was mobilising.

Shepherd's Crag - Kransik Crack

A man (70 yrs) fell 4 or 5 feet while bouldering. He fractured the neck of his femur.

2 men and their 2 teenage daughters failed to return. They were found near Esk Buttress in Eskdale.

A man (30 yrs) suffered an epileptic attack.

Black Crag, Troutdale - Mortician

A female climber (50 yrs) fell 30 ft from the 2nd pitch sustaining broken ribs, shoulder and head injuries.

Shepherd's Crag - Ardus

A climber lost his footing while leading the traverse. He fell about 30'. He was lowered to the ground by his companion. He sustained back and leg injuries. A helicopter in the area took him to Carlisle.

An elderly couple became cragfast when off-route. They called for assistance on their mobile phone.

A 10-year old girl slipped on the path and broke her arm.

A lady (67 yrs) tripped on the pitched path and injured her face and ankle.

A man (79 yrs) was found struggling across a stream. He had damaged his knee and was suffering from exhaustion.

A man (55 yrs) went to ground in poor conditions.  He was walked off by the Team.

Green Gable

2 people phoned in to say they were lost on the side of Great Gable in poor visibility and high winds.  As they wee located, another 4 were also found in difficulties above them.

An experienced walker (32 yrs) was reported overdue in Langdale. Keswick, Wasdale and Langdale/Ambleside MRTs spent the night searching for him. He turned up safe next day!

Blencathra - Sharp Edge

A man (32 yrs) slipped from the ridge at the awkward step and full 40' into the 'usual gully'. He sustained multiple minor injuries and was airlifted to hospital by helicopter.

Langdale - Borrowdale

A man (50 yrs) was reported overdue after drinking in Langdale and leaving for Borrowdale at 7 pm.  He was located in Mickleden with head injuries, hypothermia and a hangover.

A man and woman (both 25 yrs) ran out of daylight while orienteering. They used their mobile phone to be collected from checkpoint 25!
